Virtual is not the opposite of real. It’s the opposite of physical. And they are both real. This means that when you join us for worship online, it is still a real worship service and a real connection with other online congregants. The prayers are real, the preaching is real, and the ways that God will speak to you and through you in this online space is real.
Having church online is nothing new for First United Church of Christ. We do some of this every week! But it might be new for you. You'll find an amazing online congregation and our Digital Minister, and Music Minister Price Smith, and Pastor Katie Dailey waiting to welcome you. And if you have any questions or trouble connecting with our worship service, just know it is new and different, all we can do is continuing giving it our best shot.
Pastor,
KatieD+

THANKSGIVING FOR OFFERING
Consider what you carried in your hands today. Did you carry the reign of a donkey, a cloak to share, a branch to wave? What have you brought to welcome the Lord today? Whether you shared your gifts today as the in person, online, or through the mail, trust that the you are serving the Lord through this local church.
PRAYER OVER GIFTS
As the crowds cried, “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord,” we are truly grateful for the greatest gift of all, Jesus Christ our Lord.
Receive these gifts as a symbol of the dedication of our very selves to you, O God.
Use our gifts and use us
Use as as a part of the in-breaking of your kingdom, which comes and is still coming into our world today. Amen.

Welcome
We are a CAYA [come as you are] Church and we know God is Still Speaking. Our Table is open to all who wish to participate in the bread and beverage as it is God’s Table. If Judas could participate at that Passover Meal so long ago, all are certainly welcome at God’s Table here at First United Church of Christ. We share of the cup and bread as a sign that we want to grow into the image of God in which we were created. We take part together to grow more closely together, sharing each others joys and burdens.

CALL TO WORSHIP (Mark 11:9, Psalm 136:1, Psalm 118:25,26, Zechariah 9:9)
With crowds from ancient times we cry, Hosanna! Save us!
O give thanks to the Lord, for God is good! God’s steadfast love endures forever.
Blessed is the one who comes in the name of the Lord! We bless you in the house of the Lord!
Lo, your king comes to you; triumphant and victorious is he,
Humble and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey. Let us worship the living God!

#217 All Glory, Laud, and Honor
1 All glory, laud, and honor to you, O Christ we sing,
to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring.
The people of the Hebrews with palms adorned your way,
our praise and prayer and anthems we offer you this day
2 O promised one of Israel, of David’s royal line,
the one called God’s beloved of flesh and yet divine.
To you before your passion, they sang their hymns of praise,
to you, now high exalted, our melody we raise.
3 As you received their prices, we receive our prayers today,
whose justice and whose mercy and sovereignty hold sway.
All glory, laud, and honor to you, O Christ we sing,
to whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring!
CALL TO CONFESSION
Let us now confess before God our tendency, like the Jerusalem crowds, to profess our faith in moments of enthusiasm and deny our faith in moments of fear and stress.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Merciful God, as we enter this Holy Week of Lent, solemnly gathered at your house of prayer, we turn our hearts toward Jerusalem.
We want to walk the way with Jesus, to be present each step from the Mount of Olives to the cross to the empty tomb. And yet we fall away.
Forgive our stubborn resistance to Christ’s work and witness. Inspire us by your Spirit to follow in his way.
Inspire us until we enter with him into the city not made by human hands, the new Jerusalem, eternal in the heavens. May your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
The one who rode into Jerusalem to cheering crowds knew that the cross awaited. In this way, we might know the great love of God for us.
Jesus Christ, risen from the dead, has defeated sin forever.
Hear and believe this good news! In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven!
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Open our hearts and our ears to hear your Word as it is read and proclaimed. Fill us with the Spirit and surprise us, for we eagerly expect your Word and know that you will speak to us today.

#223 Why Wondrous Love Is This
1 What wondrous love is this, O my soul, O my soul! What wondrous love is this, O my soul!
What wondrous love is this! that Christ should come in bliss to bear the heavy cross for my soul,
for my soul, to bear the heavy cross for my soul!
2 To God and to the Lamb I will sing, I will sing, to God and to the Lamb, I will sing;
To God and to the Lamb who is the great I Am, while millions join the theme, I will sing, I will sing;
while millions join the theme, I will sing.
3 And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on, and when from death I’m free, I’ll sing on!
And when from death I’m free, I’ll sing and joyful be, and through eternity, I’ll sing on, I’ll sing on,
and through eternity I’ll sing on!
Gospel (Passion of Mark) The gathered will alternate reading from Left to Right.
Sermon: Judas
Affirmation of faith
I believe in God the Creator.
I believe in Jesus the Redeemer.
I believe in the Holy Spirit who Sanctifies.
PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE AND LORD’S PRAYER
O Lord, we love a parade. We love the floats and the bands. We love to wave at those passing by. We remember the joy of candy thrown to the crowd. And what could be better than balloons or ticker tape to celebrate a victory? Oh what joy!
We lift up all who have and will participate always at the “Good Old Days” Parade and for all who have been Parade Marshall inclusive of Robert Reindel, Al Busch and —— fill in the names.
And yet, we know too well that parades can become mobs. That celebrations are now interrupted by gunshots. That shouts of joy are replaced by screams of terror. That cries of “Hosanna!” can turn into shouts of “Cruci-fy!” Oh, Lord, we need you.
Hear our prayers for those who wait for the heroes and victors to arrive instead of joining the fight themselves.
Hear our prayers for those who cannot lift their voice because life or health has worn them down. Surround Henry Schroeder in your love.
We pray for Vladimer Putin to find his heart - - - for war no more anywhere, for all hearts that want to destroy to be softened.
Hear our prayers for those who spoil the joy with their own agenda.
Hear our prayers for those who feel a burden of expectations they cannot meet.
Hear our prayers for those who just need a little peace and quiet.
Hear our prayers for those who wonder why everyone else has not yet joined the march for justice.
Hear our prayers for those who have heard, “not yet, wait a little longer.”
Hear our prayers for those who cannot face the cross.
Hear our prayers for those who desperately need an empty tomb on Easter morning.
Hear our prayers for us and all the things we carry.
Give us strength and courage, faith and hope, to follow Jesus this Holy Week.
As we dine at tables, as we pray, as we walk, and even as we flee, remind us of your love that never fails. Oh, Lord, we need you, until that day when we might know the joy.
As we wait, with the confidence of children of God, we pray as Jesus taught us: “Our Father…”.
SENDING AND BLESSING
As we enter this Holy Week, may we have the courage and the faith to wait and to walk, to listen and to pray, to plan and to be surprised by the plan of the Lord that leads to life.
And as we go to invite others to join us in this most sacred way, may the love of God, the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit keep us until we meet again.
There is a name I love to hear, I love to sing its worth
It sounds like music to my ear the sweetest name on earth
O HOW I LOVE JESUS, O HOW I LOVE JESUS, O HOW I LOVE JESUS,
WHOSE LOVE HAS FIRST FOUND ME.
It tells my Savior’s love for all: Christ died to set us free.
What ever problems may befall, we’ll live in dignity.
It bids me serve amid the wrath God’s people face each day,
And sheds along life’s troubled path bright sunshine on my way

By the grace of Jesus Christ and the power of the Holy Spirit, our lives have borne much fruit. Let us now return thanks where it is due and offer the fruits of our labor back to the Lord. Let us receive the morning offering.

CALL TO WORSHIP (from Psalm 51)
Have mercy on us, O God, according to your steadfast love;
According to your abundant mercy, blot out our transgressions.
You desire truth in our deepest selves, so teach our hearts wisdom.
Let us hear your joy and gladness; let the bones that you have crushed rejoice.
Create in us clean hearts, O God; put new and right spirits within us.
Sustain in us willing spirits and restore us to the joy of your salvation. Let us worship God!
BECAUSE HE LIVES
God sent His son, they called Him, Jesus; He came to love, heal and forgive;
He lived and died to buy my pardon, An empty grave is there to prove my Savior lives!
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living, Just because He lives!
How sweet to hold a newborn baby, And feel the pride and joy he brings;
But greater still the calm assurance: This child can face uncertain days because He Lives!
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living, Just because He lives!
And then one day, I'll cross the river, I'll fight life's final war with pain;
And then, as death gives way to victory, I'll see the lights of glory and I'll know He lives!
Because He lives, I can face tomorrow, Because He lives, all fear is gone;
Because I know He holds the future, And life is worth the living, Just because He lives!
CALL TO CONFESSION (Jeremiah 31:33)
“The days are surely coming,” says the Lord, “When I will make a new covenant with my people.
I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they shall be my people. No longer shall they teach one another, or say to each other, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest.”
Friends, we are God’s people. Yet even as we strive to know our God and walk in God’s paths, we fall short. Trusting in God as a merciful covenant partner, let us confess our sin together:
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Living Christ, with whom we journey to the cross, we confess that we are always looking for an easier way.
We long for the fullness of life with you, but we are slow to abandon the comforts of the life we know. We seek the fruit of new life, but we are not willing to die to ourselves. You call us to life in community, but we stubbornly cling to “me and mine.”
Yet you offer the grace of life abundant, even and especially when our best efforts fall short.
Transform us, renew us, and free us from our attachment to what was, so that you might bring us into the glory of what will be. In Jesus’ name we pray,
Amen.
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Friends, hear the good news! We worship a God who forgives our iniquities and remembers our sins no more. Proclaim the good news with me:
In Jesus Christ we are forgiven! Thanks be to God! Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
God of living water, pour out your Spirit and nourish your Word within us, that in its time, that Word may bear much fruit. Amen.
Scripture readings:
Gospel: John 12:20-33
Sermon:
An Affirmation of faith
What is your only comfort in life and in death?
That we are not our own, but belong – body and soul, in life and in death – to our faithful Savior, Jesus Christ. Because we belong to him, Christ, by the Holy Spirit, assures us of eternal life and makes us wholeheartedly willing and ready from now on to live for God.
NICENE CREED
I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men, and for our salvation he came down from heaven and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontus Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.
PASTORAL PRAYER and the LORD’S PRAYER (Song of the Body of Christ)
Let us come before the God who holds our life and even our death and pray for the transformation that Jesus Christ has shown us is possible.
God of the cross, the grave and the empty tomb, we lift up to you all within us that is in the messy process of death and resurrection. Transform us, we pray, into the likeness of your Son, that you might use us to bear much fruit in the world:
May we die to environmental extraction and live to responsible stewardship. May we die to Christian triumphalism and live to interfaith humility. May we always include and welcome.
May we die to stagnation and aversion to change and live to the new things God is always doing among us. May we die to American exceptionalism and live to global citizenship.
May we die to isolation and NIMBY (‘Not-in-my-Backyard’)-ism and live to our shared humanity.
May we die to division and partisanship and live to reconciliation and compassion.
May we be aware that sometimes divorce must happen and we pray for those who may be struggling about getting out of a loveless marriage.
May we die to addictions and consumerism and live to our shared well-being.
May we die to me and mine and live to us and ours. God who is always bringing new life out of death and despair, we pray for all those who need your healing hand this morning — for the hungry and homeless, those sick and in prison, people living in fear, loneliness or grief.
Answer the longing of your people with the gift of your presence. All this we pray in the name of your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, who taught us to pray saying, “Our Father…”

#198 Lift High The Cross
Refrain:
Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name.
Come, Christians, follow where our Savior trod, our King victorious, Christ, the Son of God.
Refrain
All newborn servants of the Crucified bear on their brow the seal of Christ who died.
Refrain
O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, your death has brought us life eternally.
Refrain
So shall our song of triumph ever be: praise to the Crucified for victory.

CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 107:1-3, 17-22)
O give thanks to the Lord, for God is good; for God’s steadfast love endures forever. Let the redeemed of the Lord say so, those God redeemed from trouble and gathered in from the lands, from the east and from the west, from the north and from the south. Let them thank the Lord for God’s steadfast love, for God’s wonderful works to humankind. And let them offer thanksgiving sacrifices, and tell of the Lord’s deeds with songs of joy.
The Summons
Will you come and follow me If I but call your name?
Will you go where you don't know And never be the same?
Will you let my love be shown, Will you let my name be known,
Will you let my life be grown In you and you in me?
Will you leave yourself behind If I but call your name?
Will you care for cruel and kind And never be the same?
Will you risk the hostile stare Should your life attract or scare?
Will you let me answer prayer In you and you in me?
Will you let the blinded see If I but call your name?
Will you set the prisoners free And never be the same?
Will you kiss the leper clean, And do such as this unseen,
And admit to what I mean In you and you in me?
Will you love the 'you' you hide If I but call your name?
Will you quell the fear inside And never be the same?
Will you use the faith you've found To reshape the world around,
Through my sight and touch and sound In you and you in me?
Lord, your summons echoes true When you but call my name.
Let me turn and follow you And never be the same.
In your company I'll go Where your love and footsteps show.
Thus I'll move and live and grow In you and you in me.

CALL TO CONFESSION
The faithfulness of the Lord is from everlasting to everlasting. The mercies of God are new every morning. Beloved, confession of our sin before God is an act of trust in the goodness of God. In confession, we draw near to our maker in candor, knowing that nothing can be hidden from God. As we are honest with God and with one another about those places in our lives that stand in need of God’s healing, we are opened to the mercies of God. So let us confess our sin, first in unison, and then in silence…
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Holy God, giver of all that is good, we rejoice that you are the source of all that is. The breath of life is a gift from your generous hand. The food we eat is grown in the world you sustain. The community that supports us is called into being by your saving activity. Everything we have is a gift from you. Why, then, do we complain as though the manna, raining down from heaven for us even now, is not enough? Why do we worry that your well of living water will someday run dry? It is surely our sin that causes us live as though we do not trust your goodness. Forgive us, we pray. Teach us again to put all our trust in your promises that never fail. Remind us that we are always in your loving care. Fill us with grace, so that our lives might show forth the fullness of your love for all people…
ASSURANCE OF PARDON (Hebrews 10:16-18)
“This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, says the Lord: ‘I will put my laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds,’and he adds, ‘I will remember their sins and their lawless deeds no more.’Where there is forgiveness of these, there is no longer any offering for sin.”Believe the promise of the Gospel: In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (Psalm 19:14)
May the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to you, O Lord, our rock and our redeemer. Amen.

GOSPEL: John 3:14-21

APOSTLES’ CREED #881 NCH
I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended to the dead; on the third day he rose again; from the dead;
he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body,and the life everlasting. Amen
Affirmation of faith (1967, Inclusive Language Text)
Having sung God’s praise, having confessed our sin and been assured of God’s pardon, having heard God’s word, let us respond by affirming the faith of the church. What do you believe?
God’s reconciling act in Jesus Christ is a mystery which the Scriptures describe in various ways. It is called the sacrifice of a lamb, a shepherd’s life given for his sheep, atonement by a priest; again it is ransom of a slave, payment of debt, vicarious satisfaction of a legal penalty, and victory over the powers of evil. These are expressions of a truth which remains beyond the reach of all theory in the depths of God’s love for humankind. They reveal the gravity, cost, and sure achievement of God’s reconciling work.
Pastoral Prayer and the Lord’s Prayer [soft music on iPad]
Eternal God, our story together is one of your unending faithfulness to us, even as we are not always faithful to you. Holy source of all that is good, you have shown us yourself in abundance and mercy, in grace and abiding care.
Knowing of your enduring providence, we may come to you with the concerns that weigh heavily on us. We pray to you for world affairs beyond our control.
For the people of Ukraine, Israel and Gaza, we pray for peace, knowing that you alone are the source of true shalom, peaceable kingdom. Where there are those in harm’s way, we pray protection.
Where we ourselves harbor enmity and prejudice, we pray awareness and grace that we may learn forgiveness. Teach us how we may serve you more fully in ways we cannot imagine.
We pray for needs closer to home, for our own community. As we continue the season of Lent, we ask that you open our eyes to the needs on our very doorstep. May we see those whose names are known to you and offer compassion and goodwill.
We pray for victims of violence, and gun violence in particular. We offer our prayers for those who seek solutions for intractable problems. Let us not give up hope. Let us not abandon the work of healing the world — we remember that all healing comes from you.
We pray as well for ourselves, our own material and spiritual needs.
Where our members suffer from illness and affliction, grant your healing touch, bringing wholeness. For any in our midst who suffer from depression or addiction, give us understanding and compassion.
We pray that all pastors can be as the one in NY of late, just watch and do as expected and not respond to those who make worship a show time.
For those who are lonely, may we be a place of friendship, a warm haven where love is shared. To that end, we pray for the church: Universal, the UCC, and our own local congregation. Enrich our lives with your grace that we might also be repairers of the breach.
We make these and all of our prayers in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray together, “Our Father …”.
Sending and Blessing
Go into the world sure of the goodness of God. Remember the promises that God has kept. Be mindful of the ways that God has provided. Keep your eyes on the cross of Jesus Christ, and the new life that is offered to us all,
May the blessing of life be upon us and upon this local church.
May the memories of this church give us hope for the future.
May the love that we share bring strength, and may the peace be with us until we meet again. Amen
Lord of the Dance #11 [in favorites booklet]
- I danced in the morning when the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon and the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven and I danced on the earth:
At Bethlehem I had my birth.
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the dance, said he,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the dance, said he. - I danced for the scribe and the Pharisee,
But they would not dance and they wouldn't follow me;
I danced for the fishermen, for James and John;
They came with me and the dance went on:
Dance, then, wherever you may be,I am the Lord of the dance, said he,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be,And I'll lead you all in the dance, said he. - I danced on the Sabbath and I cured the lame: The holy people said it was a shame.
They whipped and they stripped and they hung me on high,
And they left me there on a cross to die:
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the dance, said he,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the dance, said he. - I danced on a Friday when the sky turned black; It's hard to dance with the devil on your back.
They buried my body and they thought I'd gone; But I am the dance, and I still go on:
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the dance, said he,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be,And I'll lead you all in the dance, said he. - They cut me down and I leapt up high; I am the life that'll never, never die.
I'll live in you if you'll live in me: I am the Lord of the dance, said he.
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the dance, said he,
And I'll lead you all, wherever you may be, And I'll lead you all in the dance, said he.

Scripture readings:
CALL TO WORSHIP (Psalm 19:7-10)
The law of the Lord is perfect, reviving the soul;
The decrees of the Lord are sure, making wise the simple.
The precepts of the Lord are right, rejoicing the heart;The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever.
The ordinances of the Lord are true and righteous altogether.
They are more desirable than gold and sweeter than honey. Let us worship God!
Lord Jesus, Who through Forty Days #211 NCH
Lord Jesus, who through forty days for us did fast and pray,
teach us with you to mourn our sins, and at your side to stay.
As you with Satan did contend, and did the vict'ry win,
oh give us strength to persevere, in you to conquer sin.
And through these days of penitence, and through the Passiontide,
yes, evermore, in life and death, O Lord Christ, with us abide.
Abide with us, till when this life of suffering be past,
an Easter of unending joy we may attain at last.
CALL TO CONFESSION
Christ calls us to live lives in harmony with our God and our neighbors.
Even our best efforts fall short. Yet our God is gracious and merciful, slow to anger,
and abounding in steadfast love. Trusting that abundant mercy, let us confess our sin together.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
God of righteousness, we confess that have not kept your commandments. We bow down before idols, declaring our allegiance to other powers and principalities.
We take your name in vain, using it to justify our own prejudices and opinions. We do not make adequate time to rest and remember your goodness, nor to revel in the delight of family and friends.
We look the other way in the face of violence and oppression, misogyny and sexual assault, land grabs and unjust economic practices. Our dishonesty and greed get the better of us.
Yet you gave us commandments not for condemnation, but so that we might live in justice and joy. Purify us by your righteousness and enfold us in your grace.
Sanctify our intentions and actions, that our lives may begin to reflect your Beloved Community who truly hopes to be better Christians by the end of this lent. Amen
ASSURANCE OF PARDON
Hear these words from the Apostle Paul, “God’s foolishness is wiser than human wisdom, and God’s weakness is stronger than human strength.” The grace of Christ is sufficient for us.
In Jesus Christ, we are forgiven! Thanks be to God!
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION (Psalm 19:14)
May the words of our mouths and the meditations of our hearts be acceptable to you, O Lord, our rock and our redeemer. Amen.

Gospel: John 2:13-22
Sermon: “Wow, Look at Angry Jesus!”
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures.
Amen.
PASTORAL PRAYER and the Lord’s Prayer
Table-turning God, we praise you, for in taking on flesh and dwelling among us, you hallowed all human experience. We thank you for the gift of emotions – from joy to sorrow to anger.
Help us to regulate our inclinations and impulses. May we always stay attuned to the guidance you give us through the feelings of our bodies, minds and spirits.
God of holy traditions, we give you thanks for the rituals that shape our lives, give us meaning, and draw us closer to you. Enliven us and keep us from growing rigid in our sacred practices.
Shake up our systems so that we may draw closer to you.
God of justice and righteousness, we pray for the healing of the nations.
Guide rulers and citizens with your wisdom and compassion. Teach us to care for the poor and vulnerable. Drive out ignorance, hatred and greed from all the earth’s peoples.
Lord Jesus Christ, whose body was and is God’s own temple, we thank you for the variety of bodies you have made in your image. Keep us always appreciative of the delightful diversity of your people.
We pray for bodies that are broken, sick, weary or growing old. Send your loving presence to all who seek healing in body, mind or spirit. Comfort all who are afflicted, and with the generative fire of your Holy Spirit, lovingly afflict all who are comfortable.
We pray in thanksgiving that Yvonne is able to speak once more.
All this we pray in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord. AMEN

Call to worship (based on Mark 8:31-38)
Let us not be ashamed of our Savior. Let us sing and praise our God out loud. In the midst of the crowd, we will praise you.
In our community, we will bear witness to our faith. Let us set our minds on divine things. Let us take up our cross and follow Christ.
CALL TO CONFESSION
When we cry to God in prayer and confession, God hears. Let us approach God’s throne of grace with confidence and faith.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION
Savior God, the public spectacle of the cross calls us to account. We hesitate and hedge when opportunities arise to speak of you. We are shy in faith and not bold to proclaim.
Your story saves, yet we keep it to ourselves. Forgive our reticence of faith. Forgive the ways we fail to serve as public witnesses. Help us be your candlelight, held high to set the world aglow. Amen.
ASSURANCE OF FORGIVENESS
God does not forsake us. Our God is a gracious God, abounding in steadfast love. Know that in Jesus Christ, you are forgiven and be at peace. Amen.
PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION
Merciful, God, help us to seek you and the message you intend for us in your Word read and proclaimed today. Amen.

PASTORAL PRAYER AND LORD’S PRAYER - soft on piano here as background
You know our prayers even before they form in our minds and are articulated with whispered words. You know how we struggle.
You know how we hope. You delight in our joy. You desire our peace. What is the point of this prayer, then, we honestly ask of you who already knows everything?
Or of any prayer, our doubt cries, when the world’s struggles have opened a hole that seems impossible to fill? Can you stop the bombs from falling, God?
Can you soften the hearts of warring dictators? Can you cure the cancer ravaging our loved one’s body?
Can you unburden the depressed from the weight of their sorrow? Can you make the chaos make sense?
God, we are vulnerable, and we know it. We need you. As the thirsty deer longs for the flowing stream, our souls thirst for you. Our hearts ache for your love.
Our spirits cry for relief from the turmoil and the sorrow. Our bodies yearn for the ecstatic movement of joy. Our minds want to be assured, without a doubt, of your presence among us and with us.
Life is a wilderness, and so often we are lost. Therefore, in these long wilderness days of Lent, we audaciously ask for your help and hope.
Comfort the sick and the grieving. Heal our wounds of heart and body. Calm our frantic anxieties. Order the chaos. Also, help us pay attention to your still, small ways of working beauty and awe into the ugly and despairing;
the bump of a bee’s head on a windowpane; the spring crocus that’s begun its journey out of the dark soil;
the uninhibited bounce of a child, dressed as batman, heroically saving his friends at the playground; the heavens ablaze in the pink, red, and orange of your glory at the morning sunrise;
the reminders – in the squeeze of a hand, the kindness of a smile, the receiving of an encouraging note – that we aren’t alone in our wilderness wanderings;
We lift up the Members in Discernment of the United Church of Christ and we lift up all Jesus Takes Up His Cross Who does not understand this? Who has not lived through it themselves in some way, somehow in life? Difficulties are everywhere and at every level of existence: The relationship ends, the friends go, the success goes to someone else, the illness comes on quickly and fells us without warning.
Clearly, there are some things we simply cannot avoid. These things disappoint us, of course. They bear down on our lives in very real ways. They change us, sometimes for life. They try us to the very marrow of our souls and they are not to be dismissed lightly. No doubt about it: It takes courage to carry them well. It is one thing when the tribulations of life come from our own hands. But when we ourselves did nothing to bring them on, the sting is even worse.
Having preached the world of the Beatitudes in a world of violence, having healed the hopeless, questioned the system, opened his arms to the outcasts and challenged the world to live differently so that life would be different for everyone everywhere, the cost of it all in jealousy, resentment, anger, and ill will comes quickly. It is this burden of malice that is the cross Jesus reaches out to take hold of here. This is the cross he did not want but was willing to accept so that the world might see another way to be alive.
This station asks us all a very direct question: For what would you be willing to risk your life? What crosses do you yourself take on, knowing the risk, understanding the cost and being committed to the consequences? The call of the second station requires us to live life consciously, to know what's going on around us, to take some kind of responsibility, however small, for the welfare of others, for justice in the part of the universe we call our homes, our country, our world.
This station calls for involvement in life. It calls us to leave the isolation of spiritual narcissism that treats the spiritual life as some sort of personal comfort zone designed to protect us from the world we live in. It requires us to make the journey from Galilee to Jerusalem ourselves, healing the sick, raising the dead, and bringing the Gospel to a world long dead of soul.
The Search Committees of the Eastern Association,
We give thanks for the grace that you make readily available when we are ready to receive it.
God, come near to us this Second Sunday of Lent, and near to those we love. Sit and stay awhile. And hear our prayers, as we pray the prayer Jesus taught us saying, “Our Father …”.
Sending and Blessing
Beloved people of God;
I invite you, in the name of Christ, to observe a holy Lent by self-examination and penitence,
by prayer and fasting, by works of love, and by meditating on Gods’ Word as you become a true Disciple/and stronger Christian
May the blessing of life be upon us and upon this local church.
May the memories of this church give us hope for the future.
May the love that we share bring strength, and may the peace be with us until we meet again.
