Virtual is not the opposite of real. It’s the opposite of physical. And they are both real. This means that when you join us for worship online, it is still a real worship service and a real connection with other online congregants. The prayers are real, the preaching is real, and the ways that God will speak to you and through you in this online space is real.
Having church online is nothing new for First United Church of Christ. We do some of this every week! But it might be new for you. You'll find an amazing online congregation and our Music Minister Bob Gorniac and Pastor Katie Dailey waiting to welcome you. And if you have any questions or trouble connecting with our worship service, just know it is new and different, all we can do is continuing giving it our best shot.
Pastor,

Paul wrote that we are the body with many members, each with a different function. Our gifts are myriad, yet our calling is common: to return to God that which we have received according to God’s grace.
Prayer of dedication
God of Abundance, we have received blessings from you and today we hear your call to share our time, our talent and our treasure with your beloved community. May these gifts bring your light, love and hope to all who need them.

Hear O Israel! I am calling! Are you listening?
We are here and we are ready.
Beloved Children, who do you say that I am?
You are our rock and our redeemer. Our trust is in you. Our hearts, minds and souls belong to you!
I created you, named you and have a calling for your life.
We give thanks with our whole hearts for your steadfast love!

Verse 1
Summoned by the God who made us, Rich in our diversity;
Gathered in the Name of Jesus, Richer still in unity.
Let us bring the gifts that differ And in splendid, varied ways,
Sing a new church into being, One in Faith and Love and Praise.
Verse 2
Radiant, risen from the water, Robed in holiness and light,
Male and female in God’s image, Male and female, God’s delight.
Let us bring the gifts that differ And in splendid, varied ways,
Sing a new church into being, One in Faith and Love and Praise.
Verse 3
Trust the Goodness of creation: Trust the Spirit strong within.
Dare to dream the vision promised, Sprung from seed of what has been.
Let us bring the gifts that differ And in splendid, varied ways,
Sing a new church into being, One in Faith and Love and Praise.
Verse 4
Bring the hopes of every nation; Bring the art of every race.
Weave a song of peace and justice; Let it sound through time and space.
Let us bring the gifts that differ And in splendid, varied ways,
Sing a new church into being, One in Faith and Love and Praise.
Verse 5
Draw together at one table, All the human family;
Shape a circle ever wider And a people ever free.
Let us bring the gifts that differ And in splendid, varied ways,
Sing a new church into being, One in Faith and Love and Praise.
Call to confession
You call out to us, Lord, but we struggle to listen. As we come before you with our hearts open, quiet the noise of the world, of our pressing thoughts and fears, so that we may hear your Spirit fully.
Prayer of confession
God of truth, like a moth that gnaws at wool,
our brokenness eats away at our souls.
We allow the cacophony of greed, selfishness, apathy and ignorance to drown out your voice as you call us to see the suffering in our world and respond to the needs of your children.
In our busy lives, we convince ourselves that there is no time to help, no space for prayer and no need for justice. Forgive us.
Remind us that only when we slow down and breathe deeply of your Holy Spirit and holy Word can our ears hear your voice. Inspire us to greater love for you and for one another. Amen.
Assurance of pardon (based on Isaiah 51:4 and Matthew 16:19)
The prophet Isaiah wrote, “Listen to me, my people, and give heed to me.” Jesus promised, “I will give you the keys to the kingdom.”
We know love and forgiveness because God first loved us and has been calling out to us forever, “You are my beloved!” May we respond to such abundant grace with deep gratitude for God’s unending forgiveness. God loves me, heals me, strengthens me and calls me by name. Through Jesus I am made whole! Thanks be to God!
Prayer for illumination
What we are not, make us.
What we have not, give us.
What we know not, teach us.
In the name of God, Creator,
Redeemer and Sustainer. Amen.

This is the water of baptism.
Out of this water we rise with new life, one in Christ, member’s of Christ’s body.
addressing Kim
Do you desire to have your child baptized into the faith and family of Jesus Christ? I Do.
addressing Kim, Allison and John
Will you teach Gia so that she will one day profess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior? We will with the help of God.
Do you promise, by the grace of God, to be Christ’s disciples, to follow the way of Jesus, to show love and justice?
We will with the help of God.
To the Assembly: Do you, who witness and celebrate this sacrament, promise your love, support, and care to Gia about to be baptized, as she lives and grows in Christ?
We promise our love, support and care.
Let us unite with the church in all times and places in confessing our faith in the triune God
Do you believe in God? I believe in God.
Do you believe in Jesus Christ? I believe in Jesus Christ.
Do you believe in the Holy Spirit? I believe in the Holy Spirit.
Christ be with you. And also with you. Let us pray.
Bless by your Holy Spirit, gracious God, this water. (pour)
Create new life in this one baptized this day that she may rise in Christ. Glory to you, eternal God, the one who was, and is and shall always be world without end.
By what name will your child be called?
Giavanna Elizabeth McCardell I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Gia you are a child of God. The Holy Spirit be upon you Giovanna child of God, disciple of Christ, member of the church.

Affirmation of faith (part of Baptism Rite)
The new life finds its direction in the life of Jesus, his deeds and words, his struggles against temptation, his compassion, his anger, and his willingness to suffer death. The teaching of apostles and prophets guides men and women in living this life, and the Christian community nurtures and equips them for their ministries.
9.25 The members of the church are emissaries of peace and seek the good of all in cooperation with powers and authorities in politics, culture, and economics. But they have to fight against pretensions and injustices when these same powers endanger human welfare. Their strength is in their confidence that God’s purpose rather than human schemes will finally prevail.
9.26 Life in Christ is life eternal. The resurrection of Jesus is the sign that God will consummate the work of creation and reconciliation beyond death and bring to fulfillment the new life begun in Christ.

Sending and Blessing (based on Isaiah 51:7)
“Listen to me … you people who have my teachings in your hearts,” wrote the prophet Isaiah. As you move out from this sacred space, may God’s Word guide you to the people you need to meet and the places you need to be.
The Light of God surrounds you,
The love of God enfolds you,
The power of God protects you,
The presence of God watches over you;
Wherever you are, God is.
May the God of all creation bless you and keep you. May Jesus Christ make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. May the Holy Spirit lift up her countenance upon you and bring you peace as all of God’s children say, “Amen!”

The gifts and calling of God are irrevocable. God will not reject God’s people. Knowing God is merciful and abounding in steadfast love, always willing to hear our prayers and accept our heartfelt confession, we turn to our Lord with boldness, speaking aloud the ways we fail to be the people God calls us to be.
Prayer of confession
God of all people, we come before you this day keenly aware of the ways we fall short of your vision for us and for our life together.
You tell us how good and pleasant it is when we dwell together. Forgive us for thinking we are self-sufficient and independent, rather than utterly dependent upon you and in need of each other.
Help us to see ourselves and others as the beloved reflections of the divine we are and give us the grace to treat each other as such. Amen.

Affirmation of Faith
God the Holy Spirit fulfills the work of reconciliation in human life. The Holy Spirit creates and renews the church as the community in which people are reconciled to God and to one another.
The Spirit enables people to receive forgiveness as they forgive one another and to enjoy the peace of God as they make peace among themselves. In spite of their sin, the Spirit gives people power to become representatives of Jesus Christ and his gospel of reconciliation to all.
Prayers of the people and the Lord’s Prayer 8/16/2026
Good and gracious God, so many of your people are hurting. There seems no end in sight to the uncertainty and pain of this season.
Parents and caregivers are worried about children’s well-being as the school year approaches and the pandemic is on the horizon. Those living in group care facilities yearn to be able to have visitors again and the loneliness of those already isolated grows.
The economic fallout from this virus gets deeper and wider as many scramble to find work and put food on the table. It feels, at times, as if we call out to you and you do not respond. We call out to you now, Lord Christ: Have mercy on us. Hear our cries.
Help us.
We call out for mercy for those on the frontlines of fighting for justice. We call out for mercy for those on the frontlines of fighting this pandemic. We call out for mercy for those grieving the death of loved ones. We call out for mercy for the sick and those who tend them. We call out for mercy for the scared and those who comfort them. We call out for mercy for those without food or housing, medical care or community. We call out for mercy on behalf of those who do not have the strength to raise their own voices. We call out for mercy for ourselves, trusting you know our deepest needs even if we do not have the wisdom to name them.
Hear us, Lord. Heal us, Lord. Help us, Lord.
When we fear you have walked away from us in our desperation, send your Holy Spirit to remind us yet again that God does not reject God’s people, that the call and gifts of God are irrevocable. Embed in us the biblical stories that teach us that even that which we intend for evil, you, Lord God, use for good. Grant us faith so that we will persist in advocating for the vulnerable and hurting no matter how long it takes for our world to be made well.
We pray in thanksgiving for Rev. Andrew Warner for his words and time today.
Give us faith, Almighty God, to keep focused on our Savior, following the Way, loving you and our neighbors, until the One we worship comes again and come again he will. We make our prayer in the name of Jesus Christ, who taught us to say when we pray, Our Father …

I danced in the morning When the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon And the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven And I danced on the earth,
At Bethlehem I had my birth.
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
I danced for the scribe And the pharisee,
But they would not dance And they wouldn’t follow me.
I danced for the fishermen, For James and John –
They came with me And the Dance went on.
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
I danced on the Sabbath And I cured the lame;
The holy people Said it was a shame.
They whipped and they stripped And they hung me high,
And they left me there On a Cross to die.
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
I danced on a Friday When the sky turned black –
It’s hard to dance With the devil on your back.
They buried my body And they thought I’d gone,
But I am the Dance, And I still go on.
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.
They cut me down And I leapt up high;
I am the life That’ll never, never die;
I’ll live in you If you’ll live in me –
I am the Lord Of the Dance, said he.
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.

Eternal God, we gather with you in worship, listen to your Word read and proclaimed, and discern your will for our lives. Incline your ear to us as we raise our prayers, petitions, joys and concerns. Hear us as we pray.
Lord, in your mercy.
Hear our prayer.
God our Rock, we are questioning what we once assumed to be sturdy and stable. Our economy feels fragile, our democracy vulnerable, our country angrily divided. Things are changing too fast, and our options feel limited. We don’t know what to do to help make things better. Life is overwhelming, and we, your people, need your help.
Lord, in your mercy.
Hear our prayer.
Creator God, the natural world groans for relief as temperatures rise, wildfires rage and natural disasters regularly and tragically endanger lives. We pray for those without the resources to rebuild after disaster strikes.
We pray for the sick whose lungs are vulnerable to polluted air. We pray for the evacuated, the refugee, the desperate and the destitute. We pray for your earth to be renewed.
Lord, in your mercy.
Hear our prayer.
Prince of Peace, save us from ourselves, our violence and warring madness. Defeat dictators hell bent on hoarding power for themselves. Protect the innocent from injustice. Strengthen the honorable. Bless us all with the moral courage to follow Christ’s way of love. Restore peace to Ukraine. Protect the persecuted of Manipur, India. Clear a path of peace for Israel and Palestine. Hear the cries of your people.
Lord, in your mercy.
Hear our prayer.
Merciful God, we are not without help or hope. Acts of compassion inspire in the face of all that is hard and harsh. Communities are collaborating to meet needs in new and exciting ways. People long silenced are finding their voice. We are newly aware of what we can accomplish when we work together for the flourishing of your kingdom. Holy God, the greatest threats are those that lead us to lock ourselves down, close our minds and hearts, build barriers to divide and protect. May your Spirit encourage our faith as we stand open-hearted, praying and believing in your endless mercy.
Lord, in your mercy.
Hear our prayer.
Now, as the Body of Christ and your covenant community, we pray the prayer Jesus taught us, saying, “Our Father …”

Tune: SHAKER SONG 1915
One License A 721 722
I danced in the morning When the world was begun,
And I danced in the moon And the stars and the sun,
And I came down from heaven And I danced on the earth,
At Bethlehem I had my birth.
I danced on the Sabbath And I cured the lame;
They cut me down And I leapt up high;
I am the life That’ll never, never die;
I’ll live in you If you’ll live in me –
I am the Lord Of the Dance, said he.
Dance, then, wherever you may be, I am the Lord of the Dance, said he,
And I’ll lead you all, wherever you may be,
And I’ll lead you all in the Dance, said he.

Thank you for praying with us - have a wonderful week!

Thanksgiving for the offering
No matter how small the gift, how meager our offering feels in the face of such large needs, Jesus receives it with gladness, blesses it, multiplies it and asks us to help distribute it to those who are hungry, weary and hurting. This is the time when we are given the unspeakable joy of participating in God’s miraculous, abundant grace. Let us worship God with our morning’s offering.
Prayer of dedication
Lord, we look in awe at the extent of your compassion, the unbounded care you give to all the earth.
We rejoice that when we give you whatever we have, you accept it, give God thanks for it, expand its power to provide and allow us to witness the miracles of mercy that ensue as a result.
We pray that you would take these very offerings and do with them what you did in that desolate place so long ago, feed people, nurture people, grant relief and give those who are hurting hope and assurance that they are seen and beloved. Amen.

Call to worship (Psalm 17:1-7)
Hear a just cause, O LORD; attend to my cry; give ear to my prayer from lips free of deceit.
From you let my vindication come; let your eyes see the right.
If you try my heart, if you visit me by night,
if you test me, you will find no wickedness in me; my mouth does not transgress.
As for what others do, by the word of your lips I have avoided the ways of the violent.
My steps have held fast to your paths; my feet have not slipped.
I call upon you, for you will answer me, O God; incline your ear to me, hear my words.
Wondrously show your steadfast love, O savior of those who seek refuge from their adversaries at your right hand.
#507 Gather - I Want to Walk as a Child of the Light
Words & Music: Kathleen Thomerson
@1970, 1975 Celebration, Aliquippa, PA
GIA@1987
I want to walk as a child of the light I want to follow Jesus
God sent the stars to give light to the world The star of my life is Jesus
IN HIM, THERE IS NO DARKNESS AT ALL
THE NIGHT AND THE DAY ARE BOTH ALIKE
THE LAMB IS THE LIGHT OF THE CITY OF GOD
SHINE IN MY HEART, LORD JESUS
I want to see the brightness of God I want to look at Jesus
Clear sun of righteousness, shine on my path
And show me the way to the Father
IN HIM, THERE IS NO DARKNESS AT ALL
THE NIGHT AND THE DAY ARE BOTH ALIKE
THE LAMB IS THE LIGHT OF THE CITY OF GOD
SHINE IN MY HEART, LORD JESUS
I'm looking for the coming of Christ I want to be with Jesus
When we have run with patience the race We shall know the joy of Jesus
IN HIM, THERE IS NO DARKNESS AT ALL
THE NIGHT AND THE DAY ARE BOTH ALIKE
THE LAMB IS THE LIGHT OF THE CITY OF GOD
SHINE IN MY HEART, LORD JESUS
Call to confession (Psalm 145:8-9)
The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and abounding in steadfast love. The Lord is good to all, and the Lord’s compassion is over all creation. Confident of this promise, we come before God and one another to confess our sins, repent and seek God’s forgiveness.
Prayer of confession
Lord of abundance and compassion, we confess that when we see the overwhelming needs of your beloved world, we want to turn away, seek our own security and retreat from the chaos all around us. Forgive us for failing to heed Jesus’ command to provide for the crowds.
Forgive us for hoarding what we have instead of willingly offering it to you that it might be blessed, multiplied and used to sustain everyone.
We know that you are present in seemingly desolate places, meeting us in our doubts, using even our failings and mistakes for your purposes.
In your abounding, steadfast love, grant us mercy and make of us a merciful, gracious and faithful people. Amen.
Assurance of pardon (Psalm 145:17-18)
The Lord is just in all ways, and kind in all that God does. God is near to all who call on the Lord, to all who call on the Lord in truth. Friends, having called on the Lord in truth, we can trust that God is near, just and kind.
Believe the good news, in Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
Prayer for illumination
What we are not, make us.
What we have not, give us.
What we know not, teach us.
Redeemer and Sustainer. Amen.

#506 NCH What a Friend We Have in Jesus v. 1
Charles C. Converse, 1868
Joseph Scriven, 1855
What a friend we have in Je-sus, all our sins an griefs to bear!
What a priv-i-lege to car-ry ev-ery thing to God in prayer!
Oh, what peace we of-ten forfeit, oh, what need-less pain we bear,
All be-cause we do not car-ry ev-ery-thing to God in prayer.
Gospel
Sermon
Affirmation of faith (silently)
We trust in Jesus Christ, Fully human, fully God. Jesus proclaimed the reign of God:
preaching good news to the poor and release to the captives, teaching by word and deed and blessing the children, healing the sick and binding up the brokenhearted, eating with outcasts, forgiving sinners, and calling all to repent and believe the gospel.
Unjustly condemned for blasphemy and sedition, Jesus was crucified, suffering the depths of human pain and giving his life for the sins of the world.
God raised this Jesus from the dead, vindicating his sinless life, breaking the power of sin and evil, delivering us from death to life eternal.
Prayers of the people and the Lord’s Prayer
God of abundant compassion and extravagant love, we join our hearts and voices in prayer to you, trusting your promise to hear and respond, not as we deserve, but as your mercy dictates.
When we look within ourselves, we are chastened by the many ways we fall short of delighting in your law. We heed the advice of the wicked without even recognizing we are neglecting your commandments.
We hurt those closest to us, injure those whom you call us to be compassionate toward and dread the consequences of our own behavior. And yet, it is in those dark, lonely places that you appear and bless us, make of us new creations and reshape us for your divine purposes.
We praise you for your unwillingness to let us go and we cling to you now as we wrestle with the chaos within and around us. We rejoice that you are present right here in this place.
God of bread and fish, hillsides and healing, we come to you like the crowds, in need of relief, fearful we do not have enough, eager to see Jesus face to face.
We heed his instruction to sit and we cannot believe that the Savior of the world serves us and refuses to send us away. Having been satisfied with the bread of heaven, we ask to be a part of distributing the mercy, grace and justice of our Lord.
We know we have been blessed in order to be a blessing to others. In that recognition we remember those in our midst who are hungry. As unemployment or underemployment or dangerous employment continues, grant security in all its forms to those most anxious about their well-being and that of those they love.
We know that all around us your beloved children long for healing in body, mind or spirit. We know you see them with compassion and want for them abundant life. May we be conduits for Christ’s power, embodying your love to all.
God of blessing and sending, we cannot count all the ways you come to us and give us that which we need. We revel in the beauty of creation. We relish the care of friends and family. We enjoy the taste of food, the voice of a loved one, the familiar melodies of hymns and the everyday mercies that are new every morning.
As we sing our praise and express our thanks, we ask you to empower us to participate in your compassionate care for all the earth and every creature upon it. We pray in the name of our Savior Jesus Christ, who taught us to say when we pray, Our Father…
